Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf
Cherries—sweet and a little tart—backed by dark bread, hints of bananas, toffee, nuts. Spice and honey in the background. Flickers of grassy-floral bitterness emerge around the finish as the beer struggles (not entirely futilely) to dry out. A vague trace of rum and brandy hangs out around the fringes.
A little lighter than medium-bodied, lightly carbonated. A bit syrupy-sticky, gently drying around the finish. Absolutely zero warning of the 11% ABV alcohol payload.
Yum. Not a particularly subtle beer—though it does reward attention paid—but a delicious one. Intense and pretty complex, more poised than balanced but holds together nicely. Alarmingly drinkable: slurpable, really. Supple and sneaky and graceful, with distinct tendencies toward outright evil. I do like Tröegs a lot, and this is one of my favorites of their beers.
