Tonight's beer: 21st Amendment Fireside Chat
Earthy-grassy bitterness flashes past, then gives way to dark bread, caramel, toast, hints of nuts and toffee. Woody spice—nutmeg, maybe allspice, cloves, cinnamon—emerges alongside flickers of dark dried fruits—dates and figs and plums. Then the bitterness reasserts itself into a long and gradually drying finish.
Medium-bodied, maybe a bit thicker and heavier; decently carbonated. A little bready chewiness, some syrupy stickiness; eventually, somewhat drying and gently refreshing. Just a trace of boozy warmth, entirely appropriate for 7.9% ABV.
A tasty Winter Warmer, a wonderful beer to drink as the dark of winter maxes out—even though it was warm today, that will change soon. Intense and complex as hell; poised and balanced and unified, in spite of what must be a raft of spices and other adjunct. A beautiful beer, and annually variable.
