Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2012)

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2012)

Dark unsweetened chocolate—100% cacao, I think—with coffee and caramel, dark bread and toast. Some dark fruit—dried, burnt, cherries and plums and figs—in the background. Flickers of vanilla, smoke and ash and peat. Evolves toward vinous and dry by the end.

Thick, syrupy-sticky, a little bit of bready chewiness. Some tannic flinty prickle, but no hint at all of the 105 ABV payload. Kinda dense and a little oily, maybe.

One of my favorite beers, one of the first exceptionally bit beers I ever had, one of the first beers I made the effort to cellar and keep around for a while. Holds together well, even after two hears in the bottle. Intense and complex, supple and smooth, balanced, integrated, imposingly drinkable. Still delicious.
