Tonight's beer: Sixpoint Global Warmer
Bristling with bitterness to begin: citrus, pine, flowers, grass; dim flickers of musk and melons. Bready sweetness in the background, with grace notes of caramel and toast; some dried fruit lurks around the edges. Starts bitter, transitions through bready sweet to starkly dry.
Medium-bodied, kinda soft and chewy, well-carbonated. A bit of resinous-syrupy stickiness, from the middle to near the long and gently-drying finish. Wraps up surprisingly refreshing.
Yum! Amber ales—especially biggish ones like this—are right in my wheelhouse, but this is a very tasty beer. Intense and complex as heck, surprisingly well-balanced, unified and immensely drinkable. Right where the style shines, where there's enough sweetness to support the hoppy bitter character and enable it to shine, as opposed to merely casting it into stark relief. I've had a couple-three beers from Sixpoint, and they've all been excellent.
