Tonight's beer: Anchor Our Special Ale (2014)
Dark-bready sweetness, with grace notes of toast, caramel, and molasses. Some brightish fruits and some sharpish spice (nutmeg, ginger, maybe cardamom). Maybe a thread of juniper—less than the last couple years, at least. Dim flickers of chocolate. Earthy-grassy bitterness in the distance, sliding forward as the beer gradually moves dryward.
A little on the bready-thick side of medium-bodied, well-carbonated. Some soft chewiness and a trace of syrupy stickiness. Gradually, gently drying; surprisingly refreshing.
A supremely tasty beer, as is the case every winter when Anchor releases the year's version into the world. Less focused on dark and roasty malts than the past couple years (If I remember correctly, the past couple years could almost have been considered porters). Intense and complex as hell, given the 5.5% ABV; nicely balanced and integrated. Impressively drinkable. Always good to pick up this beer, when it comes available.
