Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Dark Truth
Chocolate—dark and bittersweet—spiked with coffee/espresso; dark bread smeared with caramel and darkly-toasted. Molasses seeps through the interstices. Dark baking spices—cinnamon, cloves, allspice—in the background, alongside dark dried/candied/burnt fruit (mainly cherries and plums). Grass and earth, peat and smoke flicker and flash briefly around the edges. Starts darkly bittersweet, transitions smoothly to quite dry.
In the vicinity of medium-bodied, very well-carbonated; some bready chewiness and a trace of stickiness. Roasty-drying, with not much alcohol presence: just a soft glow. Surprisingly close to refreshing for such a big beer.
Very much yum (entirely not at all a surprise, this being Boulevard and all) with lots of intense and complex flavors, all unified and balanced-like. Superbly drinkable, notably smooth and supple an graceful. Thoroughly delightful, a unique take on a big stout.
