Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Brown Shugga'
Opens with a sturdy pop of citrussy bitterness—grapefruit, some limes and oranges—with piny threads, flickers of flowers and grass. Bready caramel sweetness, a dash of toast, background impressions of toffee and nuts, dried/candied fruits (dates, figs, plums). Wraps up in the direction of dry, after that momentary sojourn in the land of sweet.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, finely (but adequately) carbonated. A bit chewy and sticky, tending toward drying and surprisingly refreshing for such a big beer. Practically no hint of the 9.9% ABV.
A delicious, delicious beer that (along with Nugget Nectar) goes a long way toward proving that hoppy beers need malt with more character than most IPAs and DIPAs bother with, for balance. Massively complex and intense, superbly balanced and well-integrated, insanely drinkable. A beautiful beer, from start to finish.
