Samuel Adams Helles Bock

Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Helles Bock

Samuel Adams Helles Bock

Grassy-floral bitterness, with earthy threads, on top of caramel-toasty bread lightly glazed with nuts and toffee. Bittersweet evolves toward dry around the end.

A bit on the thick side, bready-soft and chewy and mildly carbonated.  Some gentle stickiness, especially around the finish. Eventually leads to drying, possibly refreshing.

A delicious pale bock, nicely representative of the style—and not at all an imperial Pilsner, though the lineage is clear. Nicely intense, if more straightforward (in a typical lager-ish way) than anything else; supple and subtle and immensely drinkable. Wonderfully balanced and integrated. We picked up a variety case of lagers from Samuel Adams a while ago, and it's been a neat ride all around.
