Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Old Man

Southern Tier Old Man

Earthy-grassy-floral bitterness races in front of dark bread, caramel, and flickers of toast. Dried/candied fruits (dark stuff, like figs and/or dates) next to hints of toffee and nuts. Peaty threads around the finish as the beer dries out and the bitterness reasserts itself.

Medium-bodied, decently carbonated. Traces of bready chewiness and stickiness into the finish. Briskly drying, impressively refreshing. Almost abrasive.

It's been a while since I've had this beer, but it's still a nice one, even if it's a little on the light side for an old ale: still more or less within the style, though. Intense and pretty complex, wonderfully well-balanced; superbly integrated and impressively drinkable. Obviously a beer that would play well with a wide varied of food. Yum.
