Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (2015)

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (2015)

Piny-grassy-floral bitterness, threaded with flecks of grapefruity citrus; bready, toasty-caramel sweetness an almost perfect balance—grace notes of toffee and nuts. Background impressions of dark dried/candied fruits (plums, dates, figs, cherries) and baking spice (cinnamon and cloves, mostly). Transitions to slow thick gradually-drying finish.

Thick and soft and chewy, carbonation maybe a little light but adequate; massively scrubbing and drying and almost scouring. A slight boozy glow, very subdued for 9.6% ABV. Resinous-sticky threads into the aftertaste.

One of the originals of American craft beer—pretty much the definitive American barleywine, as far as I know; if not the first, the first most people had. Crazily complex and intense, nicely integrated and surprisingly well-balanced. Impressively drinkable in a sipping beer way. Brash and reckless on top, with supple and subtle and graceful depths. Delicious as ever, with fortitude enough to age for a while.
