Tonight's beer: Tröegs Jovial

Tröegs Jovial

Dark bread and caramel and toast sandwiched around baking spice (mainly cloves) and dried/candied fruits (cherries, plums, grapes, maybe figs and dates). Earthy-grassy bitterness arises around the middle, lingering into a short dry finish. Dim hints of bananas and vanilla around the edges.

Light-bodied, with copious fine carbonation. Immensely drying and massively refreshing. Even for the relatively mild 7% ABV, no noteworthy alcohol presence. Remarkably clean and cleansing.

This is a delicious dubbel, pretty spot-on for the style. Astonishingly intense and complex, beautifully integrated and balanced, drinkable as hell. Obviously a beer that would play marvelously well with food. Tröegs continues to impress, again and again; the bottle-conditioned beers are a relatively recent addition for them, and a superb one.
