Tonight's beer: Westbrook Dark Helmet
Lots of toasty and roasty flavors to open: chocolate, hints of coffee; toast and dark bread; dim traces of toffee and/or nuts. Flickers of earth and grass in the background, maybe floral threads in the weave somewhere. Mostly darkly bitter, then slowly dry.
Medium-bodied, a bit sturdier maybe; nicely carbonated. Some bready chewiness and stickiness, eventually pleasantly drying and something a lot like refreshing.
A very convincing scwarzbier—the rye mentioned on the label is awfully subtle and barely noticeable—from a brewery with a sterling reputation that I've found to be entirely well-earned. Intense and reasonably complex, nicely integrated if probably pretty roasty even for the style, impressively drinkable. Supple and subtle and graceful. Westbrook continues to impress, persistently and consistently.
