Tonight's beer: Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel
Lots of toast and caramel, heavily sprinkled with nuts and toffee. Contrapuntal background: earthy-grassy bitterness against dark-fruity sweetness. Dim possibilities of chocolate on the fringes. Evolves smoothly to surprisingly dry by the finish.
Kinda thick and very sturdy, carbonation a little light by entirely adequate; distinctly bready-chewy and a bit sticky. Gently drying and impressively refreshing. Distinctly smooth, almost round.
Oh, wow! I knew this beer had a reputation as possibly the best doppelbock on the planet, and I wouldn't argue against it (though I'd have a very hard time choosing between this and Ayinger Celebrator). Intense as heck, and quite complex; surprisingly well-balanced, all things considered, and nicely integrated. Beautifully drinkable. Strong, but graceful and supple and subtle. I'm *very* happy to find this beer around here, finally.
