Blue Mountain Evil 8º

Tonight's beer: Blue Mountain Evil 8º

Blue Mountain Evil 8º

Dark-bready sweetness to open, with layers of caramel and toast and dark dried fruits (including but not limited to plums, cherries, figs, dates). Nuts and toffee in the distance. Densely-woven threads of tobacco, peat, baking spice, earthy-grassy bitterness through the middle; evolving into a finish that's surprisingly—and pleasantly—dry. Dim flickers of brandy, rum, and vanilla.

Light-bodied, with lots of dense, fine carbonation. A little bready chewiness and stickiness, mostly smooth. Gently drying into the finish, surprisingly clean. Wraps up impressively refreshing.

A delicious dubbel, convincingly true to style. Drinkable and more than a little devious and deceptive (though at 7.7% ABV, not punitive or overpowering); intense and complex, balanced and superbly integrated. Obviously—and unsurprisingly, given the brewer and the style—a beer that would play gloriously well with food. Blue Mountain have all sorts of clues, clearly.
