Tonight's beer: Deschutes The Abyss (2012)

Deschutes The Abyss (2012)

Deeply-roasty bittersweetness to open: coffee and dark chocolate, toasted dark bread, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar/molasses. Threads of earthy-grassy bitterness woven through the middle. Burnt fruits emerge alongside smoke and peat and ash into a long and slowly-dry finish.

A bit thicker than medium-bodied, with carbonation adequate if a little sparse; some bready chewiness, some syrupy stickiness lingering. Softly drying. Gentle boozy glow, alarmingly subdued for 11.1% ABV.

A bracing and delicious way to fortify my soul before a brief visit to the in-laws. Crazy-stupid intense and complex, smooth and supple and almost distressingly drinkable, poised and beautifully well-integrated and surprisingly close to balanced. One of my favorite beers on the planet. I'm just waiting for Deschutes to get distribution here in Maryland.
