Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Starts with a flash of bitterness: pine and citrus (grapefruit, orange, lime) on top of flowers and grass. Some sweetness emerges quickly, dark bread and toast and caramel with flecks of molasses. The beer wraps up nicely dry. Background impressions throughout of spice and dried fruit.

Startlingly light-bodied for a beer this big with flavors that tilt heavily barleywine-esque. Nicely carbonated, briskly drying and refreshing. A little resinous stickiness but mostly clean. Basically zero alcohol presence.

Such a nice beer. Hoppy as hell, but with more than enough malt to make this a shockingly well-balanced beverage. Beautifully integrated, supple and graceful and alarmingly drinkable. Pretty much sui generis, as far as I can tell, and one of those beers that I must buy (at least a 6-pack) when I see it.
