| Blue Mountain Evil 8° and black bean soup |
Beer and food, because it's Saturday!
The beer is Blue Mountain's Evil 8°, a nice dubbel. The food is a black bean soup based on a recipe I found in a book (with the additions of some sun-dried tomatoes and a chipotle in adobo, because yum). We topped the soup with some crema and some shredded goat Gouda (or at cheese a lot like a Gouda, made with goat milk, at any rate)
The soup is all kinds of dark and rich and savory, with thin veil of smoke. The dairy toppings change the texture some: The crema makes it even richer, and the cheese adds some richness as well, spiked with little crunchy crystalline seeds.
The beer is a little sweet for s dubbel, and that gets brought out by the soup. There's plenty of carbonation to make sure the soup doesn't stick to the palate all that hard (though it will stick to the ribs). Bitterness emerges eventually to refresh the palate and balance things out into the finish.
A pretty successful pairing, I think. Definitely a nice beer and a nice soup, and there seemed to be some gestalt happening. I'm pleased.
