Dieu de Ciel Grande Noirceur

Tonight's beer: Dieu de Ciel Grande Noirceur

Dieu de Ciel Grande Noirceur

Starts with a wall of dark chocolate, with strong coffee and/or espresso in the framework. Caramel emerges strongly right behind, with threads of dried/burnt fruits. Earthy-peaty impressions around the finish, as the beer slides slightly, gradually, toward dry. Smoke and ash, maybe grass, around the edges; flickers of vanilla.

Thick, dense, moderately well-carbonated. Syrupy-sticky, bready-chewy but not particularly soft. Coating, into an imposingly long finish. Alarmingly little evidence of the 9% ABV—a soft glow, maybe.

So, Dieu de Ciel have brewed a powerful and tasty Russian Imperial Stout; anyone surprised by this hasn't been paying attention. Even for the style, astonishingly intense and complex; something a lot like balanced, and nicely integrated, and impressively drinkable for such a big strong beer. Highly recommended, if the style appeals.
