Tonight's beer: Surly/Three Floyds/Real Ale Blakkr

Surly/Three Floyds/Real Ale Blakkr

Lots of chocolate as an opener, if a brief one, as pine and mostly-grapefruity citrus (with threads of lime and orange) emerge, liberally sprinkled with flowers and grass and muck. Dark bread and toast and caramel a sturdy if slightly muted counterpoint. Richly bittersweet from the beginning through the long and slow finish, eventually kinda dry.

A bit thick and bready, well-carbonated, Lots of chewiness and resinous-syrupy stickiness. Eventually, lightly drying. Alcohol is scarily subdued for 10% ABV: virtually undetectable. Kinda dense.

I'm deeply unsurprised that Surly and friends have brewed an extremely hoppy black ale, and s supremely tasty one. Intense and complex for gawddam days, surprisingly close to balanced, in the same way as tectonic plates are balanced, right before an earthquake; holds together amazingly well, drinkable as hell, in a sipping beer way.
