Blue Mountain Evil 8º

Tonight's beer: Blue Mountain Evil 8º

Blue Mountain Evil 8º

Deep dark bread, smeared with caramel and maple and molasses and maybe dark honey (like buckwheat), richly flecked with dried dark fruits: cherries, plums, figs, dates. Earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness emerges a little bit back, sprinkled with dark baking spices: cloves, cinnamon, allspice. Hints of smoke and tobacco around the edges, maybe rum and brandy and chocolate. Slides easily and gradually to surprisingly dry.

A bit on the light side of medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Just a bit of chewiness and stickiness; mostly clean and cleansing and refreshing. Softly drying, into a long and lingering finish.

One of the tastiest American dubbels I've had, by a brewery I've gone out of my way to find. Complex enough to get lost in, very intense; surprisingly well-balanced overall and magnificently drinkable. Good stuff, if the style appeals (and it obviously does to me ...).
