Tonight's beer: Lakewood Holiday Bonus
Starts off with dark-roasty bitterness, some coffee but mostly dark chocolate; deeply-toasted dark bread, touched with caramel, in the background. Ash and smoke, fruits and nuts and toffee, earthy and grass and peat in the background. Evolves readily to quite dry.
Bready-thick, a little dense and viscous; nicely carbonated. Some stickiness and some chewiness, but mostly drying and surprisingly refreshing. Filling and satisfying.
A very nice porter, an Xmas beer that still makes for good drinking in June, on a night featuring what passes around here for strong storms (though the orange peel may have faded to invisibility). Plenty intense and notably complex, nicely balanced, well-integrated. Impressively drinkable.
