Tonight's beer: Real Ale Sisyphus (2014)
Bready caramel opens, directly opposed by brightly floral-grassy bitterness; toffee, nits, dates and figs are back in the weave alongside pine, citrus, and touches of musk. Maybe some spice in the distance, and a dim hint of smoke. Ends up gracefully dry, eventually, with dark booze (mainly whiskey) spinning around the edges.
Thick and bready-chewy, a little dense and a bit chewy' very well-carbonated for the size and the style.Gently drying, substantially warming; distinctly boozy but pleasantly restrained and refined.
A pretty spectacular barleywine, really, and one that seems to have been well-served (or at least unharmed) by almost a year in the bottle. As complex and intense as one would want from 11.5% ABV, surprisingly well-balanced (a masterpiece of counterpoint); nicely unified and gloriously drinkable—in a big sipping beer way, of course. As far as I know, this is the first beer I've had from them, and it's a hell of an introduction, it is it is.
