Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Equinox
Lots of bitterness to open: citrus, tropical fruits, melons, pine; flashes of flowers and grass and (especially in the aftertaste) musk. Pale bread a subdued counterpoint. Maybe a drizzle of honey in the distance, before the beer snaps sharply to dry.
A little on the thick side of medium-bodied, smooth and a little slick, nicely carbonated. Strands of resinous-syrupy stickiness. Gently drying and subtly refreshing. Not much boozy presence—maybe a dim prickle.
Very nice: I wouldn't have thought oats would play this well in a big IPA-ish beer. Quite intense and complex, more poised and composed than balanced. Impressively drinkable. Graceful and supple. Of course Lagunitas have made a superb big hoppy beer; it's what they do.
