Tröegs Jovial

Tonight's beer: Tröegs Jovial

Tröegs Jovial

Starts out with a flash of caramel-bready sweetness, but dries out almost instantly as earthy-grassy bitterness emerges next to baking spices—mainly cloves and allspice. Hints of dark fruits along the periphery, mostly figs and dates, some plums and cherries; possibilities of toffee and/or nuts. Maybe a flicker of brandy and/or rum.

Pretty light-bodied, lots of fine dense carbonation. Massively drying and refreshing. Mostly clean and cleansing, just a hint of bready stickiness.

This is a wonderfully tasty beer, convincingly true to style (which only matters as far as knowing what the beer is supposed to be). Intense and complex, gloriously well-balanced, amazingly integrated, magnificently drinkable. Tröegs have some range and some depth, and considering how local they are to me I should make an effort to explore more.
