Weyerbacher Eighteen

Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Eighteen

Weyerbacher Eighteen

Molasses and caramel smeared heavily on toasted dark bread; the whole thing then dipped in rum. Flickers of cloves, possibilities of bananas and chocolate lurk on the periphery. Hints of bubblegum and floral-grassy bitterness emerge toward and through the finish as the beer struggles mightily (and doesn't completely fail, barely) to dry out.

Somewhere in the vicinity of medium-bodied, less carbonated than I'd expect from a weizenbock but still more or less adequate. Thick syrupy stickiness lingers and lingers. Coating but smooth; basically no alcohol presence.

A tasty and drinkable weizenbock, big enough that it's definitely a sipping beer. Intense and complex, sweeter and more rummy than seems absolutely right for the style, but nicely poised and not at all hot. Maybe a little loosely-structured. I skipped Nineteen because I don't like mangoes (and they put a lot of mangoes in it), but I'm looking forward to finding and drinking Twenty.
