Tonight's beer: Lakewood Bokkenrijders

Lakewood Bokkenrijders

Grassy-floral bitterness flashes across caramel and toast; pale bread solid, right behind. Nuts and toffee and dried fruits—figs, dates, plums, raisins—arise through the middle, with vague flickers of baking spice. After that flirtation with sweet, the bitterness reasserts itself, then the beer evolves smoothly and swiftly to surprisingly dry.

Kinda thick, bready and chewy but with good carbonation. Some syrupy stickiness around the finish, eventually gently drying. Maybe a soft boozy glow, no other hint or warning of the 8.6% ABV.

A tasty, tasty beer. Not a style I know all that well, but it seems coherent and intentional (and I'm willing to give the brewery the benefit of the doubt, here). Intense and complex as heck, nicely balanced. Stunningly drinkable, but big enough to sip slowly. I get to drink these folks' beers from time to time, and it's always a treat.
