Southern Tier Choklat Oranj

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Choklat Oranj

Southern Tier Choklat Oranj

Lots of dark chocolate, amply spiked with orange; dark bread, caramel, molasses around the edges. Earth and grass in the background, hints of burnt fruit, smoke, peat, vanilla, tobacco on the perimeter. Gradually evolves dryward, at least a little.

A little thicker and heavier than medium-bodied, a good amount of find and prickly carbonation. A lot of syrupy stickiness, some chewiness. Basically no warning of the 10% ABV. Softly drying, eventually.

Impressive: Southern Tier have brewed a beer that tastes like a chocolate orange, just as the label says. Gloriously complex and intense, surprisingly well-integrated (considering all the stuff added in), obviously intentional, probably as balanced as a beer like this can be. Alarmingly drinkable. Highly recommended, if the concept appeals.
