Tonight's beer: Belhaven Wee Heavy
Lots of caramel-bready sweetness, toast around the edges. Dark dried fruits—mainly figs and dates—in the background a ways, with hints of toffee and maybe nuts lurking. Peat and maybe smoke and vanilla emerge more toward the finish, followed closely by earthy-grassy bitterness as the beer dries out some.
A bit thicker than medium-bodied, pretty well carbonated. Some bready soft chewiness, a trace of syrupy stickiness. Eventually somewhat drying, nicely refreshing. Strikingly smooth.
A very drinkable Wee Heavy, one of the prime exemplars of the style (alongside Traquair House Ale). Pretty much a malt-bomb, but graceful and poised and drinkable; nicely complex and intense. Delicious.
