Tonight's beer: Flying Dog The Fear
Pumpkins and toast up-front, woven tightly with nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and allspice. Dark bread and caramel in the background. Vanilla emerges around the finish, as the beer sidles in the direction of dry. Flickers of rum and whiskey around the edges.
A bit thicker than medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Momentary stickiness transitions to lingering chewy stickiness. Eventually somewhat drying and something a lot like refreshing. Alcohol presence impressively restrained—just a soft glow.
A delicious pumpkin beer, a marvelous way to welcome autumn, maybe a little early. Tons of flavor: intense as hell and astonishingly complex; delightfully well-integrated, surprisingly balanced and poised and graceful. Scarily drinkable. I'm happy to embrace as a local brewer one that has done as much as Flying Dog has to embrace being from around here. Not quite a stout, but more toward the pumpkin bread end of the pumpkin beer spectrum (as opposed to pumpkin pie).
