Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas (Uncharted Waters) Red Sky at Morning
Starts with a flash of floral-grassy bitterness, then waves of pale fruit (white grapes, pears, apples) and pale bread, pepper and loves and caramel around the edges. Bitterness re-asserts itself through the middle into a quickly dry finish. Flinty-vinous hints in the distance.
A little bit denser than medium-bodied, decently carbonated. Softly chewy, a little bracing, then massively drying and refreshing. Maybe a touch of boozy prickle around the end.
Yum! Red Sky at Night had been a very successful beer for these folks, and I'm happy that after stopping production of that beer (at least for now) they brewed this, its more-worldly bigger brother. This is crazily drinkable: amazingly intense and staggeringly complex; supple and graceful and poised. There's roughly no hint or warning of the 10% ABV, and the character of the wine barrels is perfectly suited to this beer.
