Tonight's beer: Troubadour Magma Special Edition (2013)
Grassy-floral bitterness flickers in front of pale-bready sweetness, hints of honey and pale fruits—apples and pears, mostly—and citrus and maybe funky tropical whatsis around the edges. Dim hints of spice and pepper. Slides gradually toward nicely dry. A vague scrim of wet cardboard (oxidation, I know) emerges on the aftertaste.
Medium-bodied with lots of carbonation. Some vague stickiness, but that carbonation peels it off quickly. Drying and refreshing, impressively cleansing. Just a dim prickly hint of the 9% ABV.
I was worried this was going to be a shelf turd when I grabbed it a couple-three weeks ago, but it's survived about two years in the bottle in pretty decent shape. I'm sure the hops character was more pronounced when the beer was fresh, but it's quite drinkable now. Nicely intense and complex, more balanced than I expected, graceful and poised. Delicious, and I should probably try to find something in this line that's fresher.
