Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Imperial Stout X Aztec Chocolate
Opens with a wave of dark chocolate, threads of cinnamon and intermittent peppery heat; impressions of coffee, smoke, ash, burnt fruits lingering. Caramel and dark bread emerge quickly around the middle, then the beer transitions readily to gently dry.
Surprisingly light-bodied for a big stout, lots of carbonation. A bit of stickiness, quick to break free as the beer turns drying, impressively clean and cleansing. Distressingly little alcohol presence, given the 11% ABV.
A delicious beer, staggeringly complex and astonishingly intense; wonderfully balanced and integrated. Alarmingly drinkable, poised and graceful and supple. Lots going on here, but Boulevard have made a beautiful beer from what could have been a hot mess.
