Tonight's beer: North Coast Old Rasputin XIV
Lots of vanilla and caramel smeared liberally on thick roasty slabs of coffee and dark chocolate. Ashy-smoky threads woven in, with background impressions of peat and earth and burnt fruits. Dries out pretty readily and thoroughly.
Medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Remarkably smooth, alcohol present but quite subdued for 11.5%. Some soft chewiness, a trace of lingering syrupy stickiness. Eventually, a little bit drying.
An astonishingly delicious and deviously drinkable big stout. Staggeringly complex, remarkably intense; gloriously well-integrated and as close to balanced as a beer like this is likely to get, especially (or maybe even) after something like three years in the bottle. Alarmingly little alcohol presence. A wonderful beer to wrap up a celebratory evening.
