Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher 20th Anniversary
Lots of fruity sweetness—dark dried fruits like figs and dates and plums and cherries and dark grapes—spread thickly on deeply toasted dark bread. Baking spice in the distance: The coriander and star anise on the label are there, but cloves and allspice and cinnamon and ginger are more forward. Earthy-grassy bitterness appears around the finish, alongside flickers of smoke and peat and tobacco and ash, as the beer slips slightly dryward. Lingering impressions of rum and brandy.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Some chewiness, lingering stickiness. Eventually gently drying and impressively refreshing. Alcohol present but subdued for 11% ABV—just a prickle of heat in the distance.
A beautiful beer, a marvelous way to celebrate a big round-number anniversary. Weyerbacher have earned it, I believe. Crazily intense and deliriously complex, graceful as hell, supple and subtle. Marvelously well-integrated and something a lot like balanced. Frighteningly drinkable. I look forward to trying this with some age on it.
