Tonight's beer: Flying Dog The Fear

Flying Dog The Fear

Pumpkins and baking spices—nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, ginger—on top of toasted dark bread. Chocolate and hints of coffee braced against caramel and molasses. Earthy-grassy bitterness around the edges. Transitions steeply to bracingly dry.

Medium-bodied, lots of carbonation. Some soft stickiness and chewiness but wraps up quickly clean and drying and surprisingly refreshing. Very little boozy prickle: just a thready whisper.

A superb pumpkin beer, one of the first I came across that was dark (not a porter or a stout). Still plenty of roasty flavors, though. Crazily intense and impressively complex, nicely integrated and balanced. Wonderfully drinkable—and not necessarily relegated to dessert beer duty. I'm happy to drink this every autumn.
