Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

Opens with a burst of bitterness: citrus (pithy grapefruit, juicy oranges and limes), pine, flowers; threads of grass and musk. Bready sweetness in the background, threads of toast and caramel. Starts bitter, momentarily sweet, then a short steep drop to positively arid.

Maybe a bit on the chewy side of medium-bodied, lots of carbonation. Some resinous-syrupy stickiness lingers, then the beer shifts to drying, cleansing, and powerfully refreshing.

One of the best seasonal IPAs there is. Beautifully drinkable and delicious from start to finish. Intense and remarkably complex, not really balanced but beautifully well-integrated. There are people every year who complain about how this isn't as bitter this year as it used to be, but I don't buy that: This is a wonderful IPA. (That said, it's possible this is a better year than some.)
