Tonight's beer: Anchor Our Special Ale (2015)
Starts with some dark-bready sweetness, brown sugar/molasses; dark chocolate and maybe coffee lurking around the edges. Dried fruit emerges around the finish (mostly citrus, interestingly), along with baking spice—juniper, cardamom, cloves, ginger—in the interstices. Possibilities of vanilla in the distance. Wraps up neatly dry, pretty quickly.
Medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Some bready chewiness, traces of syrupy stickiness. Gently drying, eventually, and surprisingly refreshing. Actually kinda scrubbing and cleansing.
Always a wonderful beer. This seems a little more roasty-toasty than last year's, maybe more in the day of dried fruit than spices. Intense and complex—especially given the 5.5% ABV; wonderfully balanced and well-integrated. Impressively drinkable. Anchor nailed it for the forty-first consecutive year.
