Ballast Point Pumpkin Down

Tonight's beer: Ballast Point Pumpkin Down

Ballast Point Pumpkin Down

Open with pumpkins and baking spices—nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon—smeared with molasses all over caramel-toasty bread. Earthy-peaty bitterness around the edges. Richly sweet, working through gently bitter toward eventually dry.

A bit thicker than medium-bodied, bready-chewy and a little syrupy-sticky; nicely carbonated. Quickly drying, clean and cleansing, impressively refreshing.

A nicely drinkable pumpkin ale, not as punishingly strong as so many in the style. Remarkably intense and complex, balanced; wonderfully well-integrated. The Scottish Ale character of the base beer is detectable beneath heavy layers of pumpkin and spice—a nice piece of work, that.
