Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2015)
Opens with a wave of dark chocolate; coffee and caramel and deeply-toasted bread right behind. Earthy-peaty bitterness arises through the middle, lasts through a long gradually-drying finish. Burnt fruits, smoke, ash around the edges. Hints of vanilla.
A bit thicker than medium-bodied, some syrupy stickiness, lots of fine carbonation. Smooth and oily-thick going down, with no warning at all of the 10% ABV.
So, many years ago this was the first Big Stout I ever had; I definitely have a soft warm spot in my heart (or maybe my belly) for it. Intense and complex for days; wonderfully well-integrated, supple, graceful. Distressingly drinkable. Sturdy enough to age for a few years, if that's your thing. One of the beers I get every year, this time of year.
