Cigar City Jai Alai

Tonight's beer: Cigar City Jai Alai

Cigar City Jai Alai

Intensely bitter to begin—floral and citrussy, threaded with pine and grass. Pale-bready sweetness fills in the background, momentarily forward around the middle; hints of toast and caramel and honey. Bitter again, into a quickly dry finish.

Juicy and on the light side of medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. A fair amount of resinous-syrupy stickiness, some soft chewiness. Eventually gradually drying, kinda refreshing; not necessarily clean but scouring.

One of the best American IPAs that's not some sort of stupidly limited release. Intense and complex as hell, something like balanced for the style; wonderfully well-integrated and immensely drinkable. Actually seems to have come together a bit in the can, between mid-October and now: I think I like it better with those two-ish months on it—not something I would have expected, really.
