Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Winter Storm
Opens with a spray of earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness, then a building bready-toasty sweetness. Caramel and nuts and toffee around the edges. Hints of dried fruits—figs and dates, maybe a smattering of citrus—in the distance. Dries out gradually but completely.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, decently carbonated. Some soft chewiness, traces of stickiness. Eventually drying and refreshing and cleansing.
A very tasty beer, a thoroughly Americanized version of an ESB: bigger and brawnier than is probably strictly correct, and entirely honest about it. Intense and complex, balanced and drinkable, beautifully well-integrated; doesn't put a foot wrong. Not a typical winter seasonal, but one I'll keep buying as long as the folks at Heavy Seas keep brewing it.
