Tonight's beer: Smuttynose Spank
Opens with brightly bittersweet lemony fruitiness, bread and a touch of caramel slowly building right behind. Grassy-floral bitterness flecked with citrus and earth and maybe pine, all over the middle and lingering into a long and drying finish. Wraps up as it began, with bright lemons.
Astoundingly light-bodied, explosively carbonated. Clean and cleansing, drying and refreshing. There's a respectable amount of alcohol here, but it's scarily well-hidden. No real stickiness or chewiness at all.
An astonishingly graceful beer, amazingly lively. Complex as hell, and impressively intense. Balanced and beautifully well-integrated. Staggeringly drinkable. Subtle and supple. A slightly Americanized saison, maybe a little exaggerated but no kind of parody. An impossible-to-miss reminder that I *like* Smuttynose and I should buy more of their beers. Message received.
