Tonight's beer: Southern Tier 2XMAS
Caramel-toasty bread, deeply and richly threaded with dark dried fruits (figs for sure, probably dates and plums and cherries) and woody spices (nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, maybe galangal). Flickers of bright citrus and earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness. Dries out a bit, gradually.
Somewhat thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. A bit of bready chewiness, some syrupy stickiness. Slowly drying, eventually a bit refreshing. No trace of booze, other than a vague glow.
Wow. A slightly bigger take on a spiced Xmas beer, from a different tradition, but as celebratory as any other (if not more so). Amazingly complex and intense, remarkably well-balanced and integrated. Distressingly drinkable. Southern Tier nailed this one, even considering my high opinion of them.
