Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf
Tart cherries, dry-fermented honey. Dark bread laced with caramel and toast in the background. Flickers of baking spice, earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness, rum and brandy and maybe a dash of vanilla. Dries out a surprising amount, pretty quickly.
Impressively light-bodied for such a big beer, well-carbonated. A touch of syrupy stickiness, then gradually clean and drying, shockingly refreshing. Distressingly little alcohol presence for 10.5% ABV.
One of my favorite beers from this time of year, though I realize it's not to everyone's taste. Pretty much dominated by the cherries and the honey, but holds together remarkably well. Intense and pretty complex underneath that. Scarily drinkable.
