Tonight's beer: Westbrook Märzenbier
Starts with with some caramel-bready sweetness, hints of toast and toffee and nuts. Floral-grassy bitterness emerges around the finish, riding the beer toward a gradually dry finish. Maybe a lurking glimmer of something vaguely fruity.
A little lighter than medium-bodied, distinctly smooth, nice fine and lively carbonation. A bit of bready chewiness, then clean and cleansing and powerfully refreshing.
A remarkably drinkable Oktoberfest lager, from a brewery that's definitely proven to deserve the hype they get in beer-nerdish circles. Intense, more straightforward than complex; wonderfully well-balanced. Westbrook brew some crazy beers; it's pleasant to see them nail a laid-back style like this.
