Weyerbacher Insanity

Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Insanity

Weyerbacher Insanity

Caramel-bready sweetness to open, wrapped around vanilla and toast; toffee and dried fruits—figs and dates mostly, maybe plums and cherries—lurking. Earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness arises around the middle, hangs on into a long and gradually dry finish. Possibilities of smoke in the distance.

Bready-thick and syrupy-sticky, decently carbonated. A trace of boozy heat and prickle, astonishingly restrained for 11.1% ABV. Gently drying, eventually almost refreshing.

Wow.  This has been in the bottle for almost a year, and the extra time seems to have done the beer some good (or at least done it no harm). Intense as hell and staggeringly complex; supple and subtle; smooth and integrated and remarkably well-balanced. Alarmingly drinkable, in a big sipping beer kinda way, with very little alcohol presence. Clearly I'll need to keep an eye out for more of this and try to keep some around for longer.
