Tonight's beer: 21st Amendment Fireside Chat
Toasty-dark bready sweetness up against grassy-earthy-spicy bitterness. Broad swaths of dark dried fruits—plums and cherries, dates and figs; dark woody spiciness—nutmeg and cinnamon, maybe juniper. Hints of peat and earth, possibilities of smoke and chocolate.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Some stickiness doesn't last too long. Wraps up drying, eventually. Pretty smooth, with a touch of warming boozy glow.
One of the very good spiced Xmas beers, strongly influenced by Anchor's Our Special Ale; maybe a bit less variable year-to-year. Intense, complex as hell; nicely integrated and surprisingly well-balanced. Drinkable as hell.
