Tonight's beer: Anchor Our Special Ale 2015
Darkly bittersweet to open: earth and peat and grass and woody-piny spice (mostly nutmeg and juniper) butting against dark bready-fruity sweetness. Chocolate and maybe smoke woven in. Dim hints of citrus point at orange peel in the brew somewhere. Shuffles dryward around the end.
Right around medium-bodied, lots of carbonation. Some thick chewiness and a good deal of syrupy stickiness. Goes down pretty smooth, wraps up quickly drying and refreshing.
A delicious, warmly-spiced beer: the holiday season in a glass, and just about perfect for the aftermath of a big winter storm. Intense and astonishingly complex; beautifully integrated and surprisingly well-balanced (not the spice-bomb one might expect). Marvelously drinkable. Worth discovering, every year.
