Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
Imposingly bitter to start: thick slabs and smears of pine, grapefruity citrus, flowers, musk, grass. Bready sweetness, edged with caramel and toast, arises into and through the middle, then the beer evolves toward dry and again bitter.
Medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Some soft chewiness, plentiful resinous-syrupy stickiness. Eventually drying and something like refreshing; wraps up surprisingly clean and scrubbing.
A tasty, tasty IPA, drinkable as hell. Amazingly intense, staggeringly complex. Not really anything like balanced, but nicely integrated. The stereotypical winter seasonal beer is malty and highly spices; this is obviously neither, but is still a landmark on the beer calendar and an annual purchase.
