Tonight's beer: Smuttynose Frankenlager
Searingly bitter at the open: grass and flowers, pine and citrus a bit in the background. Maybe a flicker of something musky. A momentary impression of pale bready sweetness, then a sharp transition to bracingly dry.
A bit on the light side of medium-bodied, with lots of prickly-fine carbonation. Some brief resinous-syrupy stickiness, then scrubbing and drying, eventually cleansing and almost clean.
Smuttynose call this an IPL (India Pale Lager), but it seems to me to be pretty consistent with being an Imperial Pilsner—there's some citrus and pine (along with maybe some musk) that are a little out of the ordinary for that, but that's the only exception. Intense as hell and impressively complex, not at all balanced (intentionally, I think) but nicely integrated. Nicely drinkable. An excellent beer, regardless of how one cares to categorize it.
